BEAVER ISLAND PHOTOS
Some views of the picturesque Emerald Isle of Beaver Island, 30 miles west of Charlevoix, Michigan, in Lake Michigan, are shown below. Beaver Island is the home of about 500 year-round residents and many summer visitors. In the 1840s the self-proclaimed King Strang took over the island until his assassination by one of his followers. The island is accessible by a two hour ferry ride or by air, Fresh Air Aviation and Beaver Island Airways. In the winter, only the planes go to the island. As the ferry gets about an hour out of docking at Beaver Island you can catch glimpses of the island rising from the West with cottages tucked away in the pine trees. Beaver is the center of an archipelago with smaller surrounding islands. The French fur traders visited this island around 1670, naming the island "Isle due Castor." Beaver Island is the literal English translation of that. Next came the early while settlers (Indians were already here) fishing the abundant waters of Lake Michigan. James Jesse Strang the Morman "king" was here in the 1850's. After his assassination in 1857 the non-Morman residents evicted the Mormons with the folks of Irish ancestry moving back to the island, attracted by fishing, farming and lumbering.
